Hackathon - App Concept and Design

Whispir — OMG App

A 32 hour (2-day) Hackathon took place recently at Whispir. This was a competition for teams within the company to create and launch an idea of their choice that would leverage and benefit the Whispir platform. The entries were judged on innovation, technical achievement, application and impact.

Our idea

Our team decided to prototype a proof of concept for a smart-phone application that enables simple coordination of formal and informal groups working together in the case of events. The idea would be that all group members have up-to date visibility of the event details and the status of other members in the group. Additional member information could be displayed such as certifications, skills, role or job title.

We kicked off by mind mapping and wireframing on the whiteboard as a team before I began sketching out the user journey for a particular use case.

Creating an event space and then a particular event within that space.

Building the prototype

After drafting out the lo-fi wireframes in Sketch I began refining them by adding some more considered elements such as iconography, some profile images and a more interesting navigation, for the sake of the demonstration to the company.

Next I began to prototype the user flow to make sure that as many steps as possible were covered to illustrate our use case.

I created a basic icon set for the user to select from, to personalise their workspaces by category and colour palette.

The finishing touches

I added some finishing touches to create more consistency across the visual language of the app UI. I introduced curved corners and circle shapes where possible, including within the bottom navigation, the buttons and icons.
